‘Evidence Matters Before Regional Human Rights Courts: The African Court in Comparative and Critical Perspective’

11-13 May 2026, Pretoria, South Africa

If you have any question which is not answered below, please contact: dissect.erc@ugent.be

Where will the conference take place?

Here, at the Future Africa campus of the University of Pretoria: South St, Koedoespoort 456-Jr, Pretoria 0186, South Africa.

Which is the nearest international airport?

O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg. The campus is 40 to 60 minutes away by car, depending on traffic. The journey costs about ZAR 350 by Uber or ZAR 800 by taxi.

Do I need to arrange my accommodation?

No, we have booked single-occupancy rooms at the Future Africa campus for all speakers, for four nights from 10 to 13 May, allowing you to arrive the day before the conference starts and to stay until the following morning (14 May).

Contrary to what was announced in the call for papers, DISSECT will pay for these nights. However, as a contribution towards the costs, we have now introduced a conference fee of €150, which all participants must pay and which is non-refundable (except as part of a travel grant).

If you wish to book extra nights at Future Africa or change the booking to a double occupancy, you can do so—at your own costs—by contacting Future Africa directly:

  • Tel: +27 (0) 12 420 6969
  • WhatsApp: +27 (0) 73 240 7182

What about meals during the Conference?

We shall offer the following meals:

  • Breakfast as part of your accommodation package
  • Lunch on the three days of the conference
  • Evening reception (drinks and snacks) on 11 May
  • Dinner on 12 May
  • Tea and coffee breaks during the conference

Any other meal (including dinner on 13 May) is at your own costs. We shall recommend a few venues nearer the time.

Will it be possible to apply to have some costs refunded by the Conference?

No, prospective participants who indicated in early correspondence to us that they would want to apply for a travel grant have been invited to do so. We have made clear we are not able to refund visa fees, local transfers, or any meal which is not offered by the Conference.

I have applied for a travel grant which includes a fee waiver. Can I be dispensed from paying the conference registration fee?

No, even as your application is successful, you will have to pay the €150 conference fee when you register. This fee will be reimbursed to you after you have attended the conference.

Can I participate online?

No, in order to foster in-depth engagement and conversations, we require in-person attendance throughout the proceedings.

My paper is co-authored. Can we all attend the conference?

Our invitation to the Conference only extends to one author per paper. You therefore must decide between yourselves who will be representing you at the Conference. Only this person should register.

How long will I have to present my paper?

We shall inform participants in due time of the format we have selected for the presentation of papers. This may involve having one member of your panel introducing what they have understood to be the key points of your paper before you add some observations. Whatever format we select, there won’t be enough time for a paper to be read in its entirety.

I have specific needs. What should I do?

You hopefully will have indicated these needs at registration, and we have/will let you know whether we are able to accommodate them. If our response has not been forthcoming or new needs arise, please email us on dissect.erc@ugent.be

I can no longer participate. What should I do?

If you find out that you are no longer able to attend the conference, please, please inform us promptly. For obvious reasons, whilst we shall regret your absence, it is important that we are hopefully in a position to recoup some of our costs and/or can offer your place to someone else.
